Statement

Over the course of a lifetime, my immersion in creative work - writing, music and the visual arts – sees me entering an arena where my artistic imagery forms a partnership with the written word. Simply put, I’m building upon the old adage that every picture tells a story and as I work through the daily creation of visual pieces a story always comes to mind. Sometimes the words are complete fictions or hold at the heart a small kernel of a personal truth that is exaggerated. At other times I’m describing real moments, feelings and thoughts. The purpose is not very deep; rather, I am creating miniature documentations of an examined life.

Mick Mather, Photography and Words:

Excerpt from The Vignettes: "Table Setting"

"...The table was set . . . a small candle,
a just-the-right-height flower arrangement in a cut
glass vase. I studied the stems, the crown of baby's
breath and tiny flowerlets, then arranged it  - not for the aesthetic look of it, but for the
character of the shadow the little candle was
casting on the wall..."

Excerpt from The Vignettes: "Nightshade"

Streetlights shine upward, into the spreading canopy
where wind decides how sparkling stars shall
be revealed. Up beyond the nightshade, each
argues with the other mediated by the fullness of the
moon. Arcing 'cross the sky, even this nocturnal agent
of the sun summons the early bright, the final
arbitration and banishment for a time, of such
dissident voices.

"Flight of the Milkweed"

An iridescent mass struggles, yearning to be free of
the cracked pod, deaf to admonishments and the safety
of home. Strands of silk enlist the wind as an
accomplice, offering enthusiastic applause, weaving a
path to the sky. One by one furry seedlings advance,
lift off and take flight. Soon, an affiliated concert
of millions fills the air, producing a pageant of
summer snow.

"Softened by the Fog"

"...She stood close while the new day crept over the
eastern drumlin allowing the sun to kiss the rounded
crest of the next. Before us, between that golden
ridge and a slate gray sky beyond, was a peaceful,
overgrown field. I felt the squeeze of her hand as
warm currents of air were urged into the hollow,
gently lifting the mist, where barbed wire and nettles
and prickly-stemmed weeds were softened by the fog..."
